Tunable Cateye Lasers (CEL)

CEL

Description

The tunable lasers can be combined with optical amplifiers or fibre amplifiers for direct wavelength amplification, or with frequency converted systems to access second harmonics and sum or difference frequency mixing.

The CEL cateye diode laser utilises a cateye reflector and ultranarrow filter to replace the alignment-sensitive diffraction grating of conventional Littrow and Littman-Metcalf designs. Enjoy the rock-solid stability normally expected only from DFB and DBR diodes – but with wide-range tunability, order-of-magnitude smaller linewidth, broader range of wavelengths, much lower sensitivity to optical feedback – and much lower diode cost.

Schematic of the cateye design

The CEL is robust, stable, and acoustically inert. It is inherently self-aligning so you can tune tens of nanometres without having to realign. In combination with electronics, the linewidth can be well below 100 kHz. The CEL is available for most wavelengths between 630nm to 1620nm, at powers up to 250mW extra-cavity.

Extended chassis cateye laser with internal isolator and built-in integrated mini digital controller

The CEX/CEF variant allows for internal mounting of an isolator and even integration with our mLC Mini Laser Controller (pictured), driving the laser directly from the laser head (over TCP/IP or USB), providing a very compact tunable laser solution without the need for a separate electronics controller box. Isolator options can be found here.

Exceptional stability without realignment

The cateye architecture replaces traditional diffraction gratings with a self-aligning reflector and ultranarrow filter, enabling tuning over tens of nanometres without re-alignment, and an angular wavelength sensitivity an order of magnitude smaller than a Littrow

Ultra-narrow linewidth performance

When paired with Santec’s control electronics, CEL lasers achieve free running linewidths well below 100 kHz, supporting high-resolution spectroscopy and coherence-sensitive applications.

Wide wavelength and power range

Available from 630 nm to 11620 nm, with output powers up to 250 mW (extra-cavity), covering a broad range of experimental requirements.

Compact, integrated control options

CEX/CEF variants support integrated Laser diode controllers (mLC), optical isolators and fibre coupling, enabling a compact, all-in-one laser solution with USB or TCP/IP connectivity.
